There is no perfect CV, only a clear and authentic presentation of your professional story.

A current CV helps your experience speak clearly.
Dear job seekers, let's talk.
Months ago, I shared a post about what really matters when applying for roles through LinkedIn and other job platforms. One point I mentioned, but did not explore deeply, was this: keep your CV up to date. It sounds basic, but it is a big one.
At Recroot Africa, we have conversations with candidates whose CVs no longer reflect where they are in their careers today. Your LinkedIn profile and the CV you upload to a job platform should both reflect your current professional reality.
Your CV is the first presentation of you when you apply. Many candidates ask, "What is the perfect CV?"
There is no perfect CV, only a clear and authentic presentation of what is written in it. Read that again.
Think of your CV as an elevator pitch to a hiring manager or recruiter. It should read like a concise personal introduction, not a job description copied and pasted from somewhere else.
Strong applications begin with a clear, current and credible professional story.
1Keep it short and impactful
A focused one-page CV with relevant information can be more useful than four pages filled with responsibilities. For each role, select three or four achievements that show the value you delivered. If you find this difficult, Recroot Africa can coach you on how to communicate your experience more effectively.
2Be realistic and authentic
Include achievements you truly delivered and can discuss with confidence. Every result on your CV should be part of your real experience, not something written only to impress.
3Remove unnecessary information
Details such as date of birth, gender, marital status, and primary or secondary education are often unnecessary. Use that space for your most relevant education, recent training, or professional certification.
4Update your CV at every milestone
Update your CV whenever you complete an important project, earn a qualification, take on new responsibilities, or achieve a measurable result. Do not wait until the day you need to apply. If you have been out of the industry for a while, be transparent. You can state "Career Break" and provide context during the interview.
5Structure your experience correctly
List your experience from your most recent role to your earliest. If an older role is not relevant to the position or your current area of expertise, it is fine to shorten or remove it.
6Name your CV file correctly
Your CV filename should make you easy to identify. Use a clear format such as First Name Last Name_CV.pdf. Avoid names such as "My CV", a single first name, or an unclear file title. It may seem small, but it matters.
7Use PDF format
When applying through LinkedIn or another job platform, save your CV as a PDF. A PDF preserves your formatting and gives recruiters a consistent, professional document to review.
